HANDBOOK

When reflecting upon the teaching profession, one must emphasize the crucial significance of the teacher-student relationship and all interactions undertaken with students with special educational needs, including those experiencing a mental health crisis. This presents teachers with new challenges, amplifying work-related stress and emotional burden.

These challenges include the necessity of thoroughly understanding the individual circumstances of each student.

It is essential to remember that the causes of mental health crises can be diverse and influenced by numerous factors. Another challenge lies in close collaboration with all individuals involved in the care and upbringing of a student in a mental health crisis. Cooperation with parents or legal guardians, as well as with other teachers and school specialists, and in cases of hospitalization, also with teachers from schools organized within healthcare facilities, can be significant for the student’s recovery process.

In preparing a teacher to work with a student in a mental health crisis, regular participation in training programs and practical exercises in providing first aid is crucial, as is the availability of all necessary protective measures in the event of providing such aid, for example, in case of the need to stop bleeding.

The challenges presented to teachers in the context of their work with a student in a mental health crisis are numerous. There are many more than those mentioned above. Therefore, it is necessary to explore this area of teachers’ work through research to understand their needs and support them. This was the aim of the completed Heads Up project – Mental Health of Youth at School, which resulted in the creation of a guide for teachers entitled “From Awareness to Action: A Teacher’s Guide to Student Mental Health.” Drawing upon external resources is extremely important for supporting teachers’ work with students in a mental health crisis. Therefore, the Guide also includes links to external sources and recommended books related to mental health.

It is also crucial to care for the well-being of teachers and provide them with appropriate support to help them navigate the demanding and often stressful nature of their work.
